Hatters dominate from long-range as Stetson rolls past Piedmont

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team topped Piedmont University 97-53 Wednesday afternoon as the Hatters broke the school record for attempted 3-pointers in a contest while Christiaan Jones and Chase Johnston each recorded double figures for the third straight game.

The Hatters (5-7) never trailed in Wednesday's contest as Stetson hit three treys in a row to take an early 9-3 lead by the 18:18 mark, forcing a 30-second timeout from the Lions (5-6). Out of the timeout, the Hatters continued their barrage of threes as Johnston connected on his first one on an assist from Rob Perry to make it 12-3. From the 13:17 mark to the 8:42 mark, the Hatters took a 27-4 lead after a 15-1 run. With 6:09 remaining in the half, a Perry 3-pointer gave the Hatters a 43-10 advantage, Stetson's largest lead of the opening stanza. With 24 seconds left, Alex Crawford sunk a triple to give Stetson a 52-21 edge right before the teams headed to the locker room.

After the intermission, Stetson kept its foot on the gas as shortly after the first media timeout of the second half, a Perry layup gave the Hatters a 40-point lead. The Lions had a short 7-0 run from the 11:09 mark to the 9:54 mark but Stetson continued to shoot well as Wheza Panzo connected on a trey with 7:55 left to end Stetson's short scoring drought. By the 3:32 mark, a Giancarlo Valdez layup gave the Hatters a 47-point lead at 92-45, their largest lead of the game, and all but sealed the Stetson victory.

With 2:30 left in regulation, Davante Robinson attempted the Hatters 42nd 3-point field goal of the contest, breaking the previous record of 41. Stetson finished the game with 46 attempted triples, setting a new school record. Overall, the Hatters went a whopping 18-for-46 from beyond the arc, falling one shy of tying the record for treys made in a single game.

For the second straight game, Johnston, Jones, and Perry recorded double figures as five Hatters tallied double figures for the first time this season. Perry led all Stetson scorers with 21, going 7-for-12 overall and shot 5-of-10 from 3-point range while Johnston added 12 points and Jones recorded his second double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 boards. Crawford recorded his first career game with double figures while Giancarlo Valdez also added 10 points of his own.

The Stetson University men's basketball team will be back on the hardwood on Thursday, Dec. 30 as the Hatters host the Point University Skyhawks for their final game of 2021. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
