Hatters come up short against FIU

Miami, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team fell 72-65 to Florida International University Saturday night at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. 
 
Stetson and FIU played a back-and-forth contest for the first 11 minutes of the first half. After a Panther 3-pointer, the Hatters (2-5) fell behind 17-11, but then a 9-0 run sparked by freshmen Tasos Cook and Alvin Tumblin put Stetson ahead 20-17 with 11:11 remaining in the half. Shortly after, the Panthers (8-1) went on a 9-0 run of their own and by the end of the half, the Hatters trailed 35-27. 
 
Coming out of the break, the Hatters fell behind 41-31 at the 17:44 mark. Over the next nine minutes, Stetson trimmed the deficit to just three, 50-47 with 8:39 left in regulation, but, three points was the closest the Hatters would close the gap as Stetson ultimately dropped its third in a row, 72-65. 
 
Mahamadou Diawara led all Hatters scorers for the second game in a row as the junior put up 12 points and brought down seven rebounds. Tumblin recorded his first career double-digit point game with 10, going 5-for-6 from the field while Christiaan Jones also added 10 points, four rebounds and three steals. 
 
The Panther's Tevin Brewer led all scorers on the night with 22 points, going 10-for-11 from the line. 
 
Stetson men's basketball will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 11 as the Hatters return home to the Edmunds Center to host Ohio University in the first of three straight home games. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
