Hatters Host UNF as Regular Season Comes to a Close

Stetson men's basketball closes out the regular season this weekend when the Hatters host a pair of games against ASUN Conference rival North Florida, beginning Friday and continuing Saturday at Edmunds Center. Both games will tip off at 2 p.m.

The Hatters (9-12 overall, 6-8 ASUN) are seeking their first weekend sweep of the year. In six of their seven previous conference weekends the Hatters have split with their opponent, winning five times on Friday and once on Saturday.

The games this weekend have serious implications towards next weekend's ASUN Tournament.

In order to improve their seeding for the ASUN Tournament, the Hatters will need to win at least one game against the Ospreys (7-13, 5-5). Currently locked into no worse than the No. 7 seed in the 9-team ASUN, the Hatters can finish as high as fourth with a sweep and losses by other teams in conference play this weekend. A split could mean Stetson finishes as high as the No. 6 seed.

Regardless of outcome, the Hatters will spend the weekend honoring the career of senior guard Christiaan Jones. The only senior on the squad, Jones will be recognized in Senior Day ceremonies prior to Saturday's game.

Jones is currently enjoying the finest season of his four-year career, averaging 10.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He's been even better in ASUN play, scoring 12.6 points and grabbing 6.6 rebounds per night.

North Florida enters the weekend after getting swept last weekend at Liberty. The Ospreys are currently tied for fourth in the ASUN standings, but have missed a pair of conference weekends due to COVID testing protocols.

Junior swingman Carter Hendricksen leads the Ospreys in scoring at 16.1 points per game.

Game Notes
•Stetson and UNF have met 32 times prior to this weekend, with the Ospreys holding a 20-12 advantage in the series. UNF has won seven straight meetings, with Stetson's last victory coming on Jan. 28, 2017 in DeLand (88-74).
•Stetson hasn't swept a season series from the Ospreys since the 2007-08 season.
•Senior guard Christiaan Jones will play in his final regular-season home games this weekend, and will be honored in pregame ceremonies on Saturday. Entering the weekend, Jones has played in 116 career games with 54 starts. On Feb. 13, he became the 36th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points, and he enters the weekend 34th in school history with 1,043 career points.
•Two freshmen are making an impact on the Stetson record book with just two regular season games remaining. Point guard Stephan Swenson is 8th among Hatter freshmen with 75 assists, and Chase Johnston is second with 64 3-pointers. He needs 6 more to break Rob Perry's record of 69 set last season. The overall season record is 76 by Luke Doyle (2016-17).
•Johnston will likely crack the Freshman Scoring Top 10 on Friday. With 298 points, Johnston needs two more to surpass Grant Lozoya for 10th.
