Hatters Rout UNF as ASUN Tournament Looms

DeLAND—Playing in his final regular season home game, Stetson's Christiaan Jones led five Hatters in double figures with a game-high 20 points as Stetson routed North Florida, 85-68, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

By winning the finale, Stetson finishes the campaign with a 10-13 overall mark and a 7-9 ASUN record. The Hatters will await their seeding for next weekend's ASUN Tournament in an announcement from the conference later tonight.

One night after scoring a career-high 34 points, Jones again paced Stetson's offensive attack. He scored 12 in the first half as Stetson forged a 51-31 lead.

While Jones wasn't quite as efficient on Saturday (8-20) as he was on Friday (14-18), he made up for it with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Despite the lopsided victory, things didn't start well for the Hatters.

North Florida (8-14, 6-6) opened the game by making their first four shots from the field, each them from beyond the 3-point arc, as they jumped out to a 12-5 lead.

From that point forward, it was all Hatters.

Stetson responded to UNF's opening salvo with an 18-6 run, taking a 23-18 lead on a layup by Mahamadou Diawara with 10:31 before halftime.

After UNF tied the game at 23 all, Stetson again went on a run, this time scoring 14 of the next 16 points and taking a 37-25 lead on a Diawara dunk with 5:01 to go.

Stetson led, 51-31, at halftime after Chase Johnston nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

UNF tried to get back in the game in the second half, but their rally was short-lived. The Ospreys cut the Stetson lead to single digits at 52-43 when Jonathan Aybar made a pair of free throws with 15:30 to go, but Stetson eventually regained control as Josh Smith and Wheza Panzo combined for 8 straight points to make it 59-43 with 13:46 left.

North Florida never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Johnston finished with 14 points for Stetson, while Diawara, Smith and Panzo each scored 13.

Josh Berenbaum led UNF with 15 points.

Game Notes
  • In addition to his 14 points, Chase Johnston set a Stetson freshman record for 3-pointers in a season with his trey from the left corner early in the first half, passing previous record holder and teammate Rob Perry. Johnston enters the postseason with 72 triples, needing 5 more to break Luke Doyle's single-season record (76).
  • Christiaan Jones had back-to-back 20-point efforts for the first time in his career after scoring 34 points on Friday and 20 points today
  • Freshman Stephan Swenson dished a career-high 11 assists as the Hatters had 22 assists on 32 made baskets
  • Wheza Panzo scored a career-high 13 points by going 5 of 8 from the field with 3 3-pointers
  • The Hatters shot 54.2 percent from the field, the 6th time this season they've been at 50 percent or better
  • Stetson can be no worse than the No. 7 seed for next weekend's ASUN Tournament
