Early Lead Not Enough in 10-7 Loss to Florida

Gainesville, Fla. – Stetson jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on Florida Wednesday night at Florida Ballpark, but the Hatters' pitchers couldn't make the lead hold up as Florida rallied to take a 10-7 win in the first of four games between the teams this year.

Florida improved to 11-3 on the year with the win while the Hatters, who have lost four straight, now stand at 10-4.

After Stetson chased Florida starter Timmy Manning with a four-run second inning, the Gators battled back. The Gators plates a pair of runs in the third inning and another in the fourth to chase Stetson starter Anthony DeFabbia, then scored four in the fifth and three more in the sixth off the Hatters' bullpen.

Stetson pushed across single runs in the seventh and ninth innings, but was never able to string together enough offense for the kind of inning they needed.

Hatters' freshman Jonathan Velazquez, the last of five Stetson pitchers, made an impressive showing on the mound, retiring all six batters he faced over the final two innings. Florida used seven pitchers in the game, with none working more than two innings.

Stetson will continue its six-game road trip on Friday when the Hatters open a three-game series in Tuscaloosa against No. 23 Alabama. All three games will air on SEC Network+ with start times of 7 p.m. on Friday, 3 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday after Daylight Saving Time kicks in.
