Redshirt freshman
Nick Durgin was the talk of college baseball last Friday night after taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning at No. 23 Alabama.
Â
Durgin surrendered a pair of hits and runs in the ninth, but got the win as
Danny Garcia closed out the game.
Â
He finished with nine strikeouts in the game and, for his performance, was selected as the ASUN Pitcher of the Week.
Â
It is the first time Durgin has won the ASUN honor and the second award this year for the Stetson pitching staff. Freshman
Anthony DeFabbia earned the honor following his opening weekend shutout of Florida A&M.
Â
Durgin faced major problems just once in the first eight innings, loading the bases in the second on a hit batter, a dropped fly ball in center and a walk. He got out of the inning with a ground out and went on to complete eight no-hit innings. He surrendered his only two hits on the first two pitches he threw in the ninth inning, allowing a single and a home run, before Garcia came in to close out the game.
Â
Durgin is now 2-1 on the season in four starts with a 2.66 ERA. He is the 26
th Stetson player to earn ASUN Pitcher of the Week and those 26 players have combined to win the honor 41 times.
Â
The no-hit bid for Durgin came close to giving Stetson its third no-hitter in the last four seasons. The Hatters got a complete-game no-hit performance from
Mitchell Senger against George Washington in 2018 and a combined no-hitter against Florida State in Mike Martin's final game in DeLand in 2019.
Â
Durgin's next start will likely come on Friday when the Hatters open a four-game weekend round-robin series against Wichita State. The Shockers will be joined by the FIU Panthers with double-headers scheduled on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Â
Before that series, the Hatters will close out their six-game road trip on Tuesday night at South Florida. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start from the USF Baseball Stadium in Tampa and is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
