Hatters Come Out Swinging to Down Wichita State

Stetson continued swinging hot bats on Friday night at Melching Field, banging out 10 hits against visiting Wichita State in a 9-4 victory over the Shockers.

Stetson improved to 13-6 on the year with the win. The Shockers, who lost earlier in the day to FIU 11-2, fall to 7-7 on the season.

Starting pitchers Nick Durgin (3-1) and Liam Eddy (1-3) cruised through the first four innings before the Hatters went to work in the fifth. After scoring four times in that frame, and seeing WSU answer with two of its own in the fifth, Stetson continued to add on.

Eric Foggo's two-run homer in the sixth answered the Shockers' two-run homer from Garrett Kocis and when Wichita State scored twice in the eighth to get to within 6-4, the Hatters put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Foggo, Kyle Ball and Jorge Arenas had two hits each to lead Stetson. Freshman Camden Traficante had his first collegiate hit, driving in a pair of runs in the eighth.

Jack Sigrist and Paxton Wallace had two hits each to lead the Shockers.

The Hatters will be back on the diamond on Saturday for a pair of games. Stetson will square off against FIU at 2 p.m. before facing Wichita State for the second time at 6:30 p.m. Both games are scheduled to air on ESPN+.

Scoring Summary
  • B5 – Stetson struck first with a four-run inning, picking up five hits. Singles by Eric Foggo and Christian Pregent set the table. Jorge Arenas plated a run with his second hit of the game before Andrew MacNeil drove in two runs with a perfectly placed bloop double to left and Kyle Ball followed with a single for a 4-0 Stetson lead.
  • T6 – Wichita State got on the board quickly on a double to left center by Paxton Wallace and a homer to right by Garrett Kocis.
  • B6 – Stetson answered right back with a long ball of its own. Nick DiPonzio reached to open the innings with a bunt single and Eric Foggo followed with a line shot off the foul pole in left for a 6-2 Hatters lead.
  • T8 – WSU got consecutive singles to open the inning to chase Durgin from the game. Nick Chiseri came on in relief and, after getting an infield pop out, he surrendered an RBI single to Wallace and a sacrifice fly to Kocis. Garcia came on to get a strikeout to preserve the Stetson lead at 6-4.
  • B8 – WSU reliever Creighton Hansen issued three consecutive one-out walks to load the bases. Jackson Olson plated a run with a ground ball to first and then Traficante delivered a two-run single through the left-side to plate a pair.
