Three-Run Ninth Powers Hatters Past FIU 6-3

Miami, Fla. – In a game that included a total of 16 pitchers, it was the Stetson Hatters who finally put together a big inning, scoring three times in the top of the ninth inning on Tuesday at FIU Baseball Stadium to down the Panthers 6-3 in the first meeting of the year between the clubs.

Stetson improves to 14-7 with the win while FIU falls to 8-9. Hatters' starter Anthony Defabbia worked two innings and was followed by Bret Neilan (2.1), Jovan Gill (1.2), Jonathan Gonzalez (2.0) and Danny Garcia (1.0).

The game was close throughout as both teams protected their pitchers in preparation for the start of conference play this weekend.

Gonzalez gave the Hatters momentum going to the ninth with a 1-2-3 frame in the eighth, and Stetson took advantage of the 10th, and 11th, pitchers of the game for FIU. Three walks loaded the bases for Kyle Ball, who hit a shot to the base of the wall in left, scoring two. A sacrifice fly plated the third run for a 6-3 Stetson lead.

That lead seemed precarious in the bottom of the inning as the Panthers loaded the bases against Garcia after the first two hitters were retired on two walks and a hit batter. Garcia was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout to close out the Stetson win.

The Hatters will be back on the diamond at Melching Field this weekend to open ASUN Conference play with a three-game series against Florida Gulf Coast. The games on Friday and Saturday are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. starts and Sunday's series finale is set for a 1 p.m. start.
