Hatters Fall in Overtime, 77-72

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Stetson's Christiaan Jones scored a game-high 28 points, but the Hatters came up just short in overtime in a 77-72 loss to Coastal Carolina in the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational, Tuesday at the Ocean Center.

Stetson's season comes to a close as the Hatters finish the year with a 12-15 record. Coastal Carolina advances to Wednesday's final against either Bellarmine or Pepperdine.

The Hatters struggled offensively over the game's last 25 minutes, shooting just 32 percent from the field after halftime. It was a stark difference from the game's first 20 minutes. Stetson led, 33-31, at the break on the strength of 57 percent shooting.

Despite their struggles, however, the Hatters stayed in the game, making a charge late in the first half to send the game to overtime.

Trailing 53-47 with 6:50 left in the second half, Stetson tied the game when Stephan Swenson's driving layup made it 59-59 with 1:19 left.

After forcing a turnover on the other end, the Hatters had a chance to take the lead but Chase Johnston's 3-point attempt was just short, giving Coastal (18-7) another chance. But the Stetson defense forced a bad shot and the game went to overtime.

In overtime, the Hatters quickly fell behind 67-60 and never got closer than three points when Johnston hit a corner 3-pointer to make it 75-72 with six seconds left. A pair of Coastal free throws accounted for the final margin.

Jones finished 10 of 14 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and was 6 of 9 from the line. He added 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year.

Rob Perry added 16 points for the Hatters, and Giancarlo matched his season high with 11 points.

Essam Mostafa led Coastal Carolina with 22 points.

Quoting Head Coach Donnie Jones
"I'm proud of this group. We battled all year long and overcame a lot. We showed a lot of resiliency this season. We were one of the youngest teams in the country and we made a postseason tournament for the first time. Tonight, we were right there in overtime and had our chances. We were a play or two away. The experience we got this year, you can't out a price tag on that. It will benefit the program in the long run."
