Stetson baseball coach
Steve Trimper will likely remember his 51
st birthday for a long time – but it won't be a warm and fuzzy memory.
Trimper's Hatters stumbled out of the gate in Saturday's game against ASUN rival Florida Gulf Coast, falling behind 10-2 after three innings before eventually falling to the visiting Eagles 13-6 at Melching Field. The teams have split the first two games of the weekend series.
Trimper was not around for the second half of the game, having been ejected in the sixth inning when a replay reversed a call at second base against Stetson. At that point in the game, the Hatters had closed the deficit to 10-6 and, had the call not gone against them, Stetson would have had a runner at second base with no one out and the middle of the order coming up.
The Hatters were never able to get back into the game, surrendering insurance runs to FGCU (13-8, 1-1) in the seventh and ninth innings. Stetson (15-8, 1-1) had a chance to put a big inning together in the seventh, getting doubles in the frame from
Ryne Guida and
Christian Pregent, but ran into a pair of outs on the bases to kill any chance to score.
The standout performance in the game came from FGCU shortstop Richie Garcia, who went six-for-six at the plate and scored five of the Eagles runs. FGCU finished the game with 14 hits and took advantage of six Stetson pitchers who allowed a total of 10 walks while also hitting a batter and uncorking three wild pitches.
FGCU reliever Tyler Tipton earned the win in relief of starter Gus Carter. Tipton came into the game with two out in the fifth inning and blanked the Hatters over the final 4.1 innings, allowing just four hits and no walks.
Pregent led the Stetson offense with a career-high three hits while
Eric Foggo and
Hernen Sardinas had two hits each. For Sardinas, it was his fourth consecutive multiple-hit game and his sixth in the last seven games.
The Hatters and Eagles will play for the series on Sunday afternoon at Melching Field. Neither team has announced a starting pitcher for the series finale, which is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
