Tampa, Fla. – Sometimes the hardest thing to do in baseball is get the final out in an inning. Such was the problem for the Stetson Hatters on Tuesday night in a 7-3 loss to USF.
The Hatters fall to 16-9 on the year while the Bulls, who won four of the five games between the teams this year, improved to 10-12.
USF has 12 hits in the game, but six of those came with two out in an inning. The Bulls used those two-out hits, plus a two-out Stetson error and a wild pitch with two outs to score six of their seven runs in the game.
Stetson managed just six hits in the game against seven USF hurlers and none of the Hatters had more than one hit. Stetson hitters also struck out 10 times in the game.
Hatters' starting pitcher
Nick Long gave a solid effort in his first career start. He allowed a run on four hits with three strikeouts. He was the first of six pitchers to throw in the game for Stetson.
The Hatters will be on the road this weekend at Jacksonville in ASUN play. The series will open on Thursday night at 7 p.m. with Friday's second game set for the same time. Saturday's series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
