Late-Inning Drama; But Hatters Fall to USF

The great thing about the game of baseball is that there is always another game tomorrow.

That is what the Stetson Hatters are telling themselves after dropping a hard-fought series opener to USF on Friday night. The Bulls hung on to take a 3-2 win, handing Stetson its first loss of the year.

Stetson is now 10-1 on the season while USF improved to 5-3.

The Hatters certainly didn't go down without a fight. Down 3-1 going to the eighth inning, Stetson cut the deficit in half. In the ninth, Stetson loaded the bases against USF closer Orion Kerkering after a catchers' interference call against Jake Sullivan extended the inning.

On that play, with runners on the corners, both teams celebrated. USF celebrated when Jackson Olson's ground ball was fielded and he was apparently thrown out at first. Stetson celebrated when the interference call was made because Austin Dilbert, who had pinch run, was in the dugout after crossing the plate on the play with what the Hatters hoped was the tying run.

It took the umpire crew several minutes to sort out the situation but, in the end, Dilbert was sent back to third base. With the bases loaded, Jorge Arenas grounded out to short to end the game.

The true story of the night was the pitching. Stetson redshirt freshman Nick Durgin (1-1) and USF redshirt freshman Jack Jasiak (2-0) squared off in a battle of power arms. Both set the tone early with a pair of strikeouts each in the first inning.

For Durgin, it was a pair of home runs, one in the sixth and another in the seventh, that proved to be his downfall. The only run Jasiak allowed was also a solo homer. Durgin went seven innings, allowing the three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts while Jasiak went 7.2 innings, allowing both Stetson runs on seven hits with 10 Ks.

The Hatters and Bulls are scheduled to play again on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., weather permitting. The teams are scheduled to wrap-up the series on Sunday afternoon at USF Baseball Stadium, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.

Scoring Summary
  • T3 – A leadoff double by Jake Sullivan was followed by a bunt hit. An infield single hit the runner going to second, preventing Sullivan from scoring, but a slow roller to short got the job done, giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
  • B4 – Hernen Sardinas knotted the game at 1-1 with a solo home run to right. It was his first homer as a Hatter and the 21st of his career.
  • T6 – Drew Brutcher led off with a solo home run to put USF back in front 2-1.
  • T7 – Roberto Pena blasted a solo home run to left, giving the Bulls a 3-1 lead.
  • B8 – Arenas delivered a one-out single, moved up on a ground ball by Andrew MacNeil, and scored on a single by Kyle Ball.

Hatters Notes
  • The win for USF was its second straight in the series, which dates back to 1966. Stetson leads the overall series between the teams 88-86.
  • MacNeil failed to reach base in the game, marking the first time this season the graduate as failed to get on.
  • Connor Kehl had his first two hit game for the Hatters. He singled in the second inning and then tried to score on Eric Foggo's double, but was thrown out at home by a perfect relay throw from left.
  • Dilbert's pinch-running appearance in the ninth inning was his first game action of the season.
  • Freshman Anthony DeFabbia pitched the final two innings for Stetson in relief, recording three strikeouts.
  • The 13 strikeouts for Stetson hitters were the most this season. The last time a Stetson team had as many as 13 strikeouts in a game was on February 29, 2020, against UMBC in an 8-7 win.
  • The eighth inning single by Arenas was the 185th hit of his career.
