Liberty Stops Hatters in ASUN Semis

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--Stetson's Christiaan Jones led all scorers with 20 points but Liberty closed the game on a 27-10 run as the top-seeded Flames downed the No. 7 seed Hatters, 77-64, in the ASUN Conference Tournament semifinals, Friday at UNF Arena.

Trailing for much of the second half, Stetson (11-14) went on an 8-0 run as a Stephan Swenson layup and consecutive 3-pointers by Chase Johnston gave the Hatters a 54-50 lead with 7:36 to play.

But the Flames (22-5) responded by scoring the next eight points, taking a 58-54 lead on a Darius McGhee three-point play with 5:32 to go.

Liberty pushed the lead to 10 points as a Chris Parker layup made it 67-57 with 2:39 remaining. Stetson never got closer than 8 points the rest of the way.

Jones was 6 of 11 from the field in his final collegiate game, connecting on 4 of his 6 3-point attempts and going 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He also snagged 5 rebounds. Johnston was the only other Hatter to score in double figures, finishing with 16 points on 5 of 12 shooting.

Parker led Liberty with 16 points.

Quoting Head Coach Donnie Jones
"I thought we made a good run and got up four, but we had a couple of key turnovers there and you can't do that against a veteran team. We just ran out of gas. We're still a young group and there's a lot of hurt in that locker room. And that shows me they care."

Game Notes
  • Chase Johnston broke the Stetson record for 3-pointers in a season when he connected on his 77th triple of the year with 8:17 to play. He made one more, giving him 78 3-pointers for the season.
  • Johnston broke the record held by Luke Doyle, who made 76 threes during the 2016-17 season. One big difference: Doyle set his record in 31 games, Johnston did it in 25.
  • Christiaan Jones reached the 20-point mark for the fifth time this season and ends his career with 59 double-digit scoring games
  • Stephan Swenson had 5 assists on Friday and has 96 on the year, putting him 5th all-time among Stetson freshmen
  • This is the second straight year Stetson was defeated in the ASUN semifinals after advancing that far just once in the previous seven seasons
