Hatters Fall in ASUN Quarterfinals

Jackie Fiacco scored her team-leading third goal of the season

Stetson women's soccer saw its spring season come to an end at the hands of UNF, 3-1, Saturday in Jacksonville.

In the ASUN quarterfinal match, the Hatters (1-7-1) fell behind early in the contest. UNF's Kendra Hoffman scored on a rebound in the 19th minute with an assist from Thais Reiss, and the Ospreys (10-1-0) carried a 1-0 lead into the half.

Stetson quickly equalized things after the break. Goalkeeper Ashleigh Wise made a pair of stellar stops, eventually leading to a Hatter free kick on the other end. Jackie Fiacco capitalized on a high-arching ball from Jordan Shaefer, heading one into the back of the net to knot the score 1-1 in the 54th minute. It was her team-leading third goal of the season.

The Ospreys answered back when Reiss scored the eventual game-winner in the 68th minute, and Carmel Oliveira added an insurance marker in the 75th minute.  The victory advances UNF to the ASUN semifinals.

Wise made five saves in goal for the Hatters.

For head coach Chris Bergmann, Saturday's result was as simple as missed opportunities.

"We have to finish our chances," Bergmann said.  "UNF finished theirs. We had some tremendous looks today. At the end of the day, you have to put them away, and that was the difference."

Though the spring season has come to an end, Bergmann saw progress in his team over the abbreviated campaign.

"We are right where we want to be," Bergmann said. "We just need to seize more of those opportunities that we find. It has been a really big step for us this spring."

The Hatters will have plenty to build on as they look to make a quick turnaround and jump back into competition this fall.

"We have absolutely achieved the goal of being a competitive team in conference play," Bergmann said. "We know we can compete with anybody because we have. For us, it will be about taking that momentum into the fall."
