Gonzalez Helps Hatters Even Series

Ft. Myers, Fla. – Stetson's Chris Gonzalez had seen enough of the Hatters' recent struggles and did something about it on Saturday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.

Gonzalez held the Eagles' potent offense to just one run on seven hits over 7.2 innings of work in leading Stetson to a 4-2 victory. The weekend series in now even at one game each as Stetson improved to 21-14 overall and 7-4 in ASUN play. FGCU fell to 22-13 overall and 8-3 in league play.

Stetson's redshirt junior left-hander threw a career-high 133 pitches in the game, with 90 of those going for strikes. That was one more pitch than he threw against Jacksonville in 11 innings of work during the 2019 ASUN Tournament.

Of the seven hits he allowed to the Eagles, only one was hard hit, the homer he surrendered to Alejandro Figueredo in the sixth inning. The others were bloops or ground balls that found empty space. Gonzalez struck out seven and walked two while leaving six FGCU runners on base.

The Hatters gave Gonzalez all the runs he needed in the third, scoring three times off FGCU starter Tyler Tipton. Hernen Sardinas drove in two of the runs with a double to right center.

Stetson took its 4-1 lead to the ninth with redshirt junior Nick Long called on to close things out for his first save. Instead, he hit three batters and allowed a hit to force in a run. Freshman Jovan Gill came in with the bases loaded and two out and struck out Ian Farrow on three pitches to preserve the victory.

Sardinas led the Hatters with three hits in the game while Andrew MacNeil had two hits and scored twice.

The Hatters and Eagles will close out their season series on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

  • T6 – MacNeil reached on a two out single, moved up on a wild pitch and scored from second on a throwing error by FGCU shortstop Richie Garcia.
  • B6 – Alejandro Figueredo got the count in his favor with two out and hit a line drive over the wall in center, cutting the Stetson advantage to 4-1.

Hatters Notes
  • Sardinas had his 15th multiple-hit game of the year, and his fifth three-hit game. His two-run double in the third was his 15th double of the year and the 67th of his career.
  • The three hit batters in the ninth inning by Nick Long were the most in a game for Stetson since Mitchell Senger hit five batters in 4.1 innings against Virginia Tech in the 2019 season-opener. It was the most hit batters in a single inning for a Stetson pitcher since Jack Perkins hit four Maryland batters in the third inning on March 24, 2018, in College Park, Md.
  • Jovan Gill's save was just the second this year for a Stetson pitcher not named Danny Garcia. Garner Spoljaric also has a single save this year.
  • Kyle Ball has been held hitless in consecutive games for just the thirdd time this year. He went three straight games without a hit twice in the first two weeks of the season, but had hit safely in 22 of 23 games since the before the first two games at FGCU.
  • With the win, the Hatters were able to keep pace in the standings with North Florida. The Ospreys defeated Jacksonville on Saturday and are also 7-4 in ASUN play.
