Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State baseball team has a reputation for drawing walks and hitting home runs. The Seminoles had four of each Tuesday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium to take a 9-5 victory over Stetson.
The Hatters fall to 22-15 on the year with the loss. No. 20 FSU improved to 21-15 with the victory.
FSU came into the day ranked ninth in the country in home runs and 18
th in walks, and hit four homers in a game for the third time this season.
Despite surrendering the nine runs on 13 hits, the quartet of pitchers for Stetson rang up a total of 16 strikeouts in the game. Starter
Anthony DeFabbia, who allowed three of the four homers, struck out six in his 3.1 innings.
Garner Spoljaric had five in his two innings and
Austin Amaral had four over 2.1 innings.
Nick Long came into the game in the eighth with two out and the bases loaded to get the final K of the day.
Stetson had 10 hits in the game, but left eight runners on base.
Jorge Arenas led the way with three hits, all singles, while
Hernen Sardinas had two, but was robbed of a third on a tough error call.
FSU ran seven pitchers to the mound in the game and that group combined to record 15 strikeouts, the most for the Hatters this year. Every starter in the Stetson lineup went down on strikes at least once in the game.
The Hatters return home to Melching Field to open a three-game ASUN Conference series against Jacksonville on Friday. It will be Senior Day, a time for Stetson University and the Stetson baseball program to honor its 20 seniors – including the two 2020 seniors,
Jonathan Meola and
Robbie Peto.

- T1 – Stetson jumped on top early when Kyle Ball doubled into the right-field corner on the third pitch of the game, scoring Andrew MacNeil, who was hit by a pitch, from first. After a Hernen Sardinas single put runners on the corners, Jackson Olson delivered a bloop single to left for a 2-0 Stetson lead.
- B1 – NCAA home run leader Matheu Nelson got the Seminoles on the board with a solo shot to center, his 19th of the year.
- B2 – After Elijah Cabell reached on a single, FSU shortstop Nander De Sedas hit a two-run homer to left, giving FSU a 3-2 lead.
- B4 – Davis Hare doubled to left center in front of Cabell, who homered to right center, increasing the FSU lead to 5-2. A pair of singles and a pair of walks forced in another run.
- T6 – Stetson got a run back on a wild pitch, scoring Sardinas from third, but the Hatters left two on base in the inning.
- B6 – A walk and a hit batter put two runners on base for Robbie Martin, who hit a three-run homer to right on an 0-2 pitch to up the FSU lead to 9-3.
- T7 – Stetson got a single run back on a double by MacNeil to score Jorge Arenas from second.
- T9 – Ryne Guida got things started with single up the middle. Pinch runner Jake Murphy moved up to second on an error and third on a single by Arenas before scoring on a ground ball by Ball.
Hatters Notes
- MacNeil was hit by the second pitch of the game. It was the 45th time he has been hit-by-pitch in his career.
- MacNeil scored his team-leading 48th run of the year on Kyle Ball's double.
- The 16 strikeouts in the game for Stetson pitchers tied a season-high for the Hatters, who also had 16 against FGCU on March 23.
- The four home runs allowed by the Hatters in the game were the most in a game since April 18, 2018, when the Hatters surrendered seven homers at Florida State. That game came just before Stetson embarked on an 18-game win streak.
- The 15 strikeouts for Stetson hitters were the most this season and the most since the Hatters struck out 17 times in a 7-3 loss to Yale on March 16, 2019. Cleanup hitter Brandon Hylton was victimized five times during the game.
