Jacksonville, Fla. – Earning a sweep in ASUN Conference play is never easy, but it is certainly gratifying. The Stetson baseball team earned that gratification on Saturday with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Jacksonville at Sessions stadium.
The win gave Stetson (19-9, 5-1) a sweep of the weekend series over JU, the first weekend sweep of the Dolphins since 2001. Jacksonville falls to 6-18 overall this spring with the loss. The Dolphins are winless (0-6) in ASUN play.
Stetson jumped on top of JU in the first inning, scoring twice against Dolphins starter Christian Graham. But runs were scarce after that, with only an RBI single by
Jorge Arenas in the eighth inning breaking a 2-2 tie.
Hatters' starting pitcher
Bret Neilan gave Stetson five shutout inning of work, but didn't factor into the decision after a sixth inning error was followed by a Dolphins homer to tie the game. Neilan struck out five in his six total innings of work.
Freshman
Jovan Gill finished off the game, allowing only a two-out single in the seventh before retiring the final six Dolphins in order.
The Hatters will conclude their five-game road trip on Tuesday night with their second crack at Florida. The Gators (18-9) took the first game of the season series 10-7 back on March 10. The game on Tuesday is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start and will be broadcast on the SEC Network+.
