After 11 Inning Marathon, Hatters Season Ends at FGCU

Eagles Advance to ASUN Final Four

Fort Myers, Fla. -- Stetson and FGCU battled deep into extra innings before the Eagles completed a 5-2 and 1-0 doubleheader sweep to win the ASUN South Division Playoff Series Friday night at the FGCU Softball Complex.

FGCU advances to next weekend's ASUN Championship "final four" in Kennesaw, Ga.  The Hatters conclude their season with a 8-26 mark.

Game two featured a brilliant pitcher's duel between Chloe Temples and Sarah Lawton. Both hurlers kept the game scoreless through the first 10 innings before FGCU finally broke through in the bottom of the 11th.  With runners at second and third and no outs, Abbey Thomas hit a walk-off RBI single to left to clinch the series for the Eagles (28-17).

The 11-inning marathon was Stetson's longest game in terms of innings since 2016, and the first time Stetson played 10 scoreless innings since 2008.

Temples was the tough-luck loser, scattering 10 hits over 10-plus innings. She allowed one unearned run, walked one and struck out five.

In game one, Stetson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Lizzie Shubert drove in Brianna Clary with an RBI single to right.

The Eagles pulled even in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Reedy Davenport.

FGCU grabbed the lead with a three-run fifth inning. Marissa Mesiemore doubled and scored on a single by Hope Hernandez to break the 1-1 tie.  Thomas and Haley Morrell also drove in runs in the inning.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.  Shubert's RBI double in the seventh cut the deficit back the three, but the Hatters would pull no closer.

Jaime Tino went the distance in the circle, allowing three earned runs over 6.0 innings.  She held FGCU to just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position as the Eagles stranded 12 baserunners in the game.

Mesiemore picked up the victory for FGCU, allowing two earned runs in 7.0 innings.

Clary, Shubert and Danielle Diaz each collected two hits for the Hatters.

The doubleheader represented the final games for Stetson super seniors Riley Russell and Elizabeth Jackson.  Russell finished seventh in school history with 71 steals, and Jackson finished sixth in school history with a .335 batting average.
