Hatters Show Guts, Rally Past UNF 5-4

Jacksonville, Fla. – Nick DiPonzio found himself watching Sunday's game at Harmon Stadium between the Stetson Hatters and UNF with the Ospreys using LHP Austin Bogart to start the game.

DiPonzio got his chance to contribute in the ninth inning, delivering a pinch-high single to score Jake Murphy from second with the go-ahead run as the Hatters avoided a sweep, taking a 5-4 victory in the series finale.

It won't be the final time the Hatters (24-20, 10-8) and Ospreys (18-20, 11-7) will meet. With UNF leading the season series 4-2, the teams will play a non-conference game next Sunday before opening a best-of-three ASUN Divisional Play-In series on Friday, May 21. The game next weekend, as well as the ASUN series, will be played on UNF's home field.

Bret Neilan gave the Hatters a chance from the mound, making a solid start with Stetson short-handed in the bull pen. Neilan retired the first 12 batters he faced before allowing two runs in the fifth inning on two walks and a pair of singles.

Bogart also pitched well in the game against his former teammate, with only a pair of solo home runs denting his ledger through the first seven innings.

After a more than 15-minute delay in the action before the sixth inning - plate umpire Doug Lee left the field, suffering from the heat of the day - the Ospreys jumped on Stetson reliever Gavin Sullivan to plate the go-ahead run. Sullivan allowed just the one run in 1.2 innings before turning the game over to Nick Long.

The Hatters got to Bogart in the eighth inning after a UNF error opened the door, with Stetson converting that error into two runs. An error by the Hatters gave one of those runs right back in the bottom of the inning as the Ospreys took advantage to score the tying run.

It was another error by the Ospreys in the ninth that opened the door for DePonzio to drive home the winning run. Long surrendered a walk to put the tying run on base in the bottom of the inning, but got Abraham Sequera on a ground ball and Alex Kachler on a fly out to end the game.

The Hatters managed just seven hits in the game while Stetson pitching held the Ospreys to six hits in the game.

Stetson will get its final chance at Florida on Tuesday night in DeLand. That game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start and is sold out. The Hatters will close the regular season next weekend, hosting Jacksonville on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. before returning to Harmon Stadium next Sunday for a 3 p.m. start against the Ospreys. Those games will not count in the ASUN standings.
