Preview: The Stetson Hatters aim for a 2-0 start to the season as they welcome in the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University this Saturday at Spec Martin Stadium. Kickoff is once again set for 6 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.

Tickets: Tickets can be purchased online at GoHatters.com/tix or at the Spec Martin Stadium ticket windows starting one hour before the game.  Stetson students are admitted free with a valid ID, while faculty and staff receive discounted pricing.  Please call (386) 738-HATS for more information.

Hometown Heroes Game: Stetson Football will commemorate the 20th anniversary of September 11th with red, white and blue fireworks throughout the game and a five minute firework display postgame. All retired/active military and first responders will receive half off admission with valid ID. The first 250 fans into the game will receive an American flag (or red, white and blue) bandana.

Last Time Out: Stetson opened its 2021 season with a 54-14 victory over Warner University at Spec Martin Saturday last Saturday. The Hatters amassed 479 total yards of offense while holding the Royals to just 106 yards overall and -13 on the ground.  Stetson graduate quarterbacks Alex Piccirilli and John Seter combined to score six total touchdowns in the win over Warner. Piccirilli went 7-for-10 for 89 yards and ran for two touchdowns.  Seter went 12-for-17 and threw for four touchdowns, the most by a Hatter quarterback in his Stetson debut.  On the ground, redshirt sophomore running back Jalen Leary ran for a team-high 103 yards plus a touchdown. It was the sixth 100+ yard rushing performance for him, the most by any player in the modern era. The Stetson defense recorded four sacks among nine tackles for loss and also forced a fumble and an interception. The pick was recorded by redshirt freshman Micah Adams, the first of his career.  Defensive back Davion Maxwell registered five tackles, a quarterback sack and a fumble recovery.

Player of the Week: Redshirt freshman kicker Cameron Gillis was named Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week following a 12-point performance vs. Warner on Saturday.  Gillis connected on a pair of career-long 35-yard field goals and hit six PATs in Stetson's 54-14 victory over the Royals.  His 6-for-7 efficiency in extra points made him just the second Hatter in the modern era to record six PATs in one game.

Scoring: Stetson's 54-point performance marked the seventh time since the program's relaunch in 2013 that the Hatters have scored at least 50 points in a game. Not surprisingly, the Hatters are 7-0 in those contests.

Number 1: Head coach Brian Young earned his first career victory on Saturday.  He is the eighth of 11 Stetson head coaches all-time to record a victory in his debut game.

All-time vs. Ave Maria: Saturday marks just the second all-time meeting between Stetson and Ave Maria. The Hatters beat the Gyrenes 60-21 on November 14, 2015 in DeLand.

About the Opponent: Ave Maria, an NAIA institution out of the Sun Conference, enters Saturday with an 0-1 record on the season after losing to NAIA nationally ranked #13 Georgetown College 42-10 last Saturday. The Gyrenes are led offensively by senior quarterback Will Tate who has completed 15 passes for 210 yards, plus a touchdown. Freshman wide receiver Joshua Jenkins has a team-leading 110 receiving yards, while on the defensive side, graduate linebacker Dylan Bryan and senior linebacker Connor Jewel have a team co-high eight tackles.

Coach Young Quotable: "The biggest thing for us right now on defense is that we have to get better tackling. That was glaring to us (on Saturday). We were in the right place but we just didn't get guys on the ground consistently enough.  Offensively, we have to continue to put the ball in the end zone, and we have to be more efficient when we get inside the red zone.  We weren't bad, but we could be better.  Every time we get down inside the red zone we have to score."
