Hatters Roll Past Ave Maria For 2-0 Start

DeLand, Fla — Stetson amassed 580 yards in total offense and improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 49-16 victory over Ave Maria Saturday evening at Spec Martin Stadium.

The Hatters compiled 304 yards on the ground and 276 yards through the air, scoring seven touchdowns for the second week in a row.  Redshirt sophomore running back Jalen Leary had a big game, rushing for 190 yards on 18 carries and scoring two touchdowns in the win. Fellow redshirt sophomore running back Jordan Younge Humphrey racked up 87 yards on 13 carries with one touchdown.

Graduate quarterback John Seter, making his first start of the season, completed 26 of 40 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns.

Nine Hatters caught at least one pass in the win. Redshirt sophomore Quinton Lane led the way with eight catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. In addition, redshirt freshman wide receiver Mason Proch caught a touchdown pass from 18 yards, while redshirt freshman tight end Kaleb Costner caught a touchdown pass from four yards out.

Ave Maria scored first and led 6-0 with 8:57 to go in the first quarter after a two play 50-yard drive. The Hatters answered back with 42 straight points, including two touchdowns in the later stages of the first quarter.

The Hatters took a 7-6 lead on a three-yard touchdown plunge by Leary, who had run the ball 61 yards on the previous play to set up the score. The Hatters then went up 14-6 on an 18-yard touchdown pass by Seter to Proch.

In the second quarter, Leary scored his second touchdown of the game, this one an 18-yard run to extend the lead to 21-6, before Seter scored his first rushing touchdown of the season, a two-yard run with 15 seconds left before halftime.

Stetson scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter to swell the lead to 42-6. First Seter found Costner in the end zone on a four-yard pass, before a 15-yard touchdown pass by Seter to Lane put the Hatters up 36 with one minute to go before the end of the third quarter.

Stetson's final touchdown of the evening came in the fourth quarter with 10 minutes remaining when Younge-Humphrey scored on a 10 yard run.

Defensively, the Hatters were led by redshirt sophomore defensive back Davion Maxwell,  redshirt junior linebacker Majeste' Hansberry, redshirt defensive back Alex Villas and redshirt sophomore linebacker Ethan Hull with seven tackles each. Meanwhile, redshirt junior defensive back Dwight Lawrence had an interception in the win.

Ave Maria was led by freshman wide receiver Joshua Jenkins with five catches for 105 yards.

Stetson has a bye week next weekend, but will return to action on September 25th for a game at Princeton University at 1 p.m.
