Hatters fall at No.14 UCF

Orlando, Fla. -- The Stetson University women's soccer team fell 5-0 to the University of Central Florida on the road Sunday nigh after enduring a three-hour lightning delay.
 
After the lightning delay, Sunday's match between the Hatters (3-5-1) and the Knights (5-3) began at a quick and aggressive pace. Stetson was aggressive from the opening whistle, pushing up field and forcing UCF on the defensive but was unable to create any scoring opportunities. At the beginning of the 8', the Knights drew the first blow as UCF's Mallory Olson netted a deflected pass from Anna Henderson to put UCF up 1-0. 
 
Stetson remained aggressive after the UCF goal, but the Hatters offense could not create any scoring opportunities. In the 44', UCF's Marta Estupinan headed a goal directly off a corner kick from Darya Rajaee, putting UCF up 2-0 as the match headed to intermission. 
 
Out of the break, UCF controlled much the second half. In the 51', Mallory Olson netted her second goal of the night for an unassisted score. Five minutes later, Kristen Scott scored, extending UCF's lead to 4-0. Then, in the 64', UCF found the back of the Hatters goal for the fifth time. 
 
"It was certainly tough being on the road playing the No. 14-ranked team, especially after a three-hour lightning delay, but we rose above adversity today," said Hatters head coach Chris Bergmann. "It showed our heart and being able to see our depth was great."
 
After five straight road matches, Stetson's women's soccer team returns home to the ATC on Thursday, Sept. 23 as the Hatters open ASUN Conference action with a match against the Bellarmine University Knights. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
