Hatters have a strong showing to open fall tournament schedule

Bradenton, Fla. -- The Stetson University women's tennis team competed in the PTT Bradenton IMG Women's 25k Hard 4 last week to open its fall season.

Three Hatters finished in the top-20 as Anais Gabriel finished 11th, Alanna Di Francesco finished 12th and Cheri Darley finished 16th.

Gabriel went 2-3 in her five matches throughout the week as the senior lost her opening match in two sets but came back to take her second one in three sets. After falling in her third match, Gabriel won her fourth 7-6 and 7-5 in two sets before falling in her final match in three sets.

Di Francesco dropped her first two sets, 6-1 and 6-1, but came back strong in her third match taking it 6-2 and 7-6 in two sets. The Madrid native dropped her fourth set but finished out the tournament with a win in her final match.

After Darley dropped her first match 6-4 and 6-4 in two sets, the freshman won three-straight beginning with a 7-5 and 6-4 decision. Her third win came in a three-set battle as she dropped the first set 6-1, but came back to take the last two sets at 6-2.

"It was a big week of tennis," said Hatters head coach Travis Sandlant. "It was great to get these quality matches every single day as it will prepare us for regionals coming up."

Stetson's women's tennis team will be back on the court on Friday, Sept. 24 as the Hatters host the first of two Stetson Invites this fall at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
