Hatters fall to Flames 75-59 in ASUN opener

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team fell 75-59 to Liberty University at home Tuesday night in the Hatters 2021-22 Atlantic Sun Conference opener.

The Hatters (6-8) quickly jumped out to a 10-point lead as Stetson led 15-5 at the 15:08 mark in the first half. Over the next six minutes, the Flames (10-6) mounted a comeback as Liberty knotted the contest at 21 apiece on a 16-6 run. After Liberty's Brody Peebles connected on a layup in the paint, the Flames took a 30-21 lead and capped off another 9-0 run. A Christiaan Jones 3-pointer ended the Hatters scoring drought, and after two free throws and a trey from Chase Johnston, Stetson trailed 30-28 with 3:50 left in the half. Over the final three minutes of the half, Stetson was unable to find the basket and the Flames finished on a 7-0 run to take a 37-28 lead to the locker room.

Liberty opened the second half with another scoring run as the Flames took a 48-13 lead by the 15:45 mark. Soon after, the Hatters deficit ballooned to 20 as the Flames held a 55-35 lead with 12:15 left in regulation. Down the stretch, the Hatters continued to trail but from the 4:51 mark to the 3:37 mark, Stetson connected on three triples as Johnston, Josh Smith and Rob Perry all hit from downtown. With 3:18 left, Stetson cut its deficit to 14 after a Smith steal and dunk but that was the closest the Hatters would come, ultimately falling 75-59.

Perry led all scorers on the night as the junior recorded 18 points, going 5-for-10 from the field and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the stripe. Johnston scored double figures for the sixth game in a row as the sophomore tallied 13 points while Jones added 11 of his own.

Liberty had five players record double figures as both Darius McGhee and Shiloh Robinson each tallied 16 points.

The Stetson University men's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 8 as the Hatters travel to University of North Florida for an ASUN Conference bout with the Ospreys. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
