KENNESAW, Ga. – Hatter women's soccer played a superb first half, but six second-half goals from Kennesaw State ended SU's postseason-possible final contest, 6-1. While this loss may sting for a long time, the program did make strides this season with exceptional play from underclassmen.
Â
The Hatters were completely locked in for the first 45 minutes, controlling the run of play and creating chances. In the 15th minute,
Chloe Washington,
Hanna Arvay and
Telma Sif Buadottir connected with Buadottir having KSU's goalkeeper Allanah Blye beat but putting the shot wide of the target. Minutes later,
Anna Brethauer rattled the crossbar with a header off a corner kick from
Gaby Padilla. Washington put a shot on goal but Blye was positioned to catch the attempt. SU outshot the hosts 9-2 in the first frame with a mountain of possession.
Â
The second half looked like a completely different game with Kennesaw controlling the run of play. Three minutes into the second frame, the home side got in front when a KSU corner kick curled into the net. After five minutes of second-half play, the advantage doubled after another set piece goal went in, this time from a free kick. In the 57th minute, a third goal, off the taken free kick found the net.
Kyleigh Thelen managed to find a bright spot for the Hatters and pressed forward, eventually working into the KSU goal box and slotting home a goal for Stetson, but three more unanswered goals from the Owls ended the match at 6-1.
