Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hatters Women's Basketball picks up win in final tournament game, beats Albany

LAS VEGAS – The Hatters lead for all four quarters as they downed Albany, 61-40, Sunday afternoon in the Cox Pavilion.

Both sides traded layups to opening the scoring with each making a mark within the first two minutes. UAlbany's Karyn Sanford drained a three at the 4:39 mark of the first quarter putting the New York-based squad up, 7-6, but that would be the only lead the Great Danes managed.

While it was a two-point game after one quarter, 11-9 SU, the Hatters opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run, which increased the advantage to double digits around halfway through the second quarter with a Layup from Jaelyn Talley capping the run, 21-11 Hats, 5:21 left in the second quarter. Albany chipped the lead down to nine, 30-21, to close out the frame.

Head coach Lynn Bria has spoke about the third quarter typically being a tough quarter, but Stetson maintained the advantage after Albany put in their best performance of the game in the frame. The Great Danes scored 14 in the quarter, but the Hatters bested them with 16, successfully repelling runs made by the opposition.

Stetson put away the America East-side in the fourth quarter with only allowing Albany to make two field goals in the final 10 minutes, en route to the 21-point victory in the Cox Pavilion

Kiya Turner led all scorers and all rebounders with 13 points, nine boards coupled with four assists. Jaelyn Talley [12] and Khamya McNeal [10] also hit double figures. Alyssa Hargrove contributed with nine points and six assists. Anabel Ellison grabbed five rebounds while making her first start in a Hatters uniform.  Jordan Peete and Maddie Novak recorded eight and seven points respectively, off the bench.

The Hatters return to DeLand for a few days of recovery before facing Denver on Friday in the Edmunds Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
