Head Coach Shellie Robinson records win No. 1

DeLand, Fla. -- First-year head coach Shellie Robinson notched her first win as the Hatters skipper Friday afternoon as the Stetson University softball team topped Georgia State University 8-2 in Stetson's first game of the Stetson Lead Off Classic at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters (1-1) fell behind early as GSU got on the board in the top of the first on a wild pitch, but after a Lizzie Shubert single knotted the game at one apiece, GSU's Chloe Middlebrooks put the Panthers (1-1) back on top 2-1 in the top of the second. In the bottom half of the second, sophomore Juls Schumacher tied the game at 2-2 with her first-career home run. Then, one batter later, in her first career at-bat, freshman Dylan Anthony sent one over the left field wall to go back-to-back with Schumacher and put the Hatters in front 3-2.

In the home half of the third, Schumacher doubled home two more runs to give the Hatters a 5-2 lead and they did not look back. Stetson tacked on another run in the third and then two more in the fourth and cruised to an 8-2 win.

Jaime Tino went the distance in the circle as the fifth-year senior allowed only two runs on four hits and punched out four. The Royal Palm Beach native did not surrender a hit from the third inning to the seventh inning before she gave up a lead-off single.

In game two, the Hatters bats struggled early as Delaware's Graceyn Frost held Stetson off the base paths until Danielle Diaz led off the fifth with a walk. In the sixth, Jordyn Stanfill broke up both the no-hitter and the shutout as the sophomore belted a lead-off home run to center, but the Hatters still trailed 3-1.

In the bottom of the seventh the Hatters put the tying runs on base as Anthony reached first on a one-out walk and Diaz singled to left, but Stetson was unable to capitalize and fell by a final score of 3-1.

Stetson is right back at it on Saturday, Feb. 12 with games three and four of the Stetson Lead Off Classic as the Hatters have a rematch with Delaware at 3 p.m. and then host Indiana State at 5 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
