Hatters go 1-1 in second day of Stetson Lead Off Classic

DeLand, Fla. -- On day two of the Stetson Lead Off Classic, the Stetson University softball team went 1-1 in its two games as the Hatters topped Delaware 3-1 in their first game, but then fell to Indiana State 6-4 in eight innings in their second game at Patricia Wilson field.

In game one, Stetson had a rematch with Delaware as the Hatters fell to the Blue Hens the night before. In the third inning of Saturday's game Brianna Clary got the Hatters (2-2) on the board first with an RBI-single to plate Alyssa Gilman. One batter later, Haley Fox plated Clary with a single to left to give the Hatters a 2-0 lead.

In the sixth, senior Danielle Diaz gave Stetson a much-needed insurance run as she doubled home Fox and extended the Hatters lead to 3-0. In the top of the seventh, Delaware's Halle Kisamore ended Lauren Hobbs' shutout with a solo home run to left but that was the only run the sophomore allowed.

Hobbs went the distance in the winning effort as she allowed one run on four hits and punched out three.

In Stetson's second game of the day, the Hatters fell behind early as a Stetson miscue led to a Sycamore run in the top of the first. In the home half of the third, Lizzie Shubert knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI-triple to right. Diaz then singled home Shubert to give the Hatters a 2-1 edge.

In the top of the fourth, ISU plated a run on a bases loaded walk to deadlock the game at 2-2 until ISU took a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Then in the seventh, with two outs and runners on second and third, Evette Morgan singled home Jaela Haynes to tie the game at 3-3 and force extra innings.

In the eighth, two Hatters miscues led to three Sycamore runs and although Stetson plated a run in the bottom half, ISU came out on top 6-4.

Stetson's softball team looks to wrap up their opening weekend tournament as the Hatters face the Georgia State Panthers for a second time on Sunday, Feb. 13. First pitch is set for noon and will be streamed on ESPN+.
