Schumacher's late-game heroics lift Hatters past Georgia State

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University softball team needed some late-game heroics Saturday afternoon as the Hatters battled through a 16-minute rain delay and came from behind to defeat Georgia State 7-6 on the final day of the Stetson Lead Off Classic.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Hatters (3-2) found themselves down 6-5 with two outs runners on 1st and 2nd. Just as Haley Fox walked to the plate, the skies opened over Patricia Wilson Field and delayed play for 16 minutes. Once play resumed, Fox walked on four straight pitches to load the bases and bring up Juls Schumacher. The Lake Worth native came through as she laced a two-run double to right center and gave the Hatters a 7-6 lead.

The one-run lead was all senior Jaime Tino needed in the top of the seventh as the Hatters reliever set down the Panthers 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

The Hatters took an early 2-0 advantage as Dylan Anthony smacked an RBI-single to left and Evette Morgan hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate the game's first two runs. An inning later, the Hatters doubled their lead Brianna Clary scored on a passed ball and Marissa Baxter doubled home Fox to make it a 4-0 Stetson lead after three innings.

In the fourth, the Panthers (1-4) stormed back and put up six unanswered runs on seven hits. GSU's Emily Buck held the Stetson offense at bay for the next two innings as the Hatters had no response until after the rain delay in the home half of the sixth.

Tino picked up her second win of the season as she worked 3.1 scoreless innings and allowed only two hits with one punch out.

The Hatters are back in action at Patricia Wilson Field on Tuesday, Feb. 15 as Stetson hosts Florida International University in a midweek matinee. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on the Stetson YouTube channel, HatterVision.
