Klein shuts out Panthers in Hatters 4-0 win over FIU

DeLand, Fla. -- Junior Lauren Klein threw a complete game, two-hit shutout Tuesday afternoon as the Stetson University softball team defeated Florida International 4-0 at Patricia Wilson Field. 
 
The Hatters (4-2) got on the board in the bottom of the first after an FIU miscue led to Briana Clary standing on third with nobody out to lead off the inning. Lizzie Shubert brought Clary home on a sacrifice bunt as Stetson scored without the aid of a base hit. 
 
Stetson's first inning run was its only run of the day until Jordyn Stanfill led off the fifth inning with a first-pitch homer to put the Hatters in front 2-0. An inning later, after Klein set the Panthers (1-4) down in order in the top half of the sixth, Danielle Diaz and Marissa Baxter traded places on the base paths as the pair hit back-to-back one-out doubles to give the Hatters a 3-0 advantage. Four batters later, with the bases loaded, Evette Morgan took a pitch off the thigh to bring home Alyssa Gilman for the Hatters fourth run. 
 
Tuesday's win was Klein's third career complete game and her second career shutout as she earned her first win of the 2022 campaign. The Westminster, Colorado native only allowed two hits and punched out one Panther.
 
Stetson's softball team will be back on the diamond on Friday, Feb. 18 as the Hatters travel to Leesburg for The Spring Games. Stetson opens the weekend tournament against Maryland with the first pitch at 4 p.m. All games will be streamed on Flosoftball.
