Hatters pitching dominates on final day of The Spring Games

Leesburg, Fla. -- The Stetson University softball team accomplished two rare feats Sunday afternoon at The Spring Games as Lauren Klein punched out 11 Hofstra batters in the Hatters 4-0 win over the Pride; and then in their second game of the day, the Hatters defense tied an NCAA record by turning five double plays in their 4-1 win over Monmouth University.

Junior Lauren Klein only needed one run as she went the distance in the circle shutting out the Pride (0-4) and only allowed six hits and one walk. The Westminster, Colorado native's 11 punchouts were the most strikeouts in a game for a Stetson pitcher since Courtney Brandt rung up 12 LaSalle hitters back on March 4, 2015.

In the top of the first in game one, Danielle Diaz drove in Brianna Clary with a sacrifice fly to give Klein and the Hatters (7-5) the only run they needed on the day. Klein cruised through the first three innings with a one-run lead until the bottom of the fourth when an Evette Morgan single and a Pride miscue led to a 3-0 Hatters advantage. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Lizzie Shubert scored on a passed ball for an extra insurance run.

In Stetson's second game of the day against Monmouth, all the offense came in the first two innings as Diaz continued to swing a hot bat, driving in the game's first two runs with a two-run single. In the bottom half, the Hawks (1-3) cut into the Stetson lead with an unearned run but also hit into their first of five double plays in the game.

The Hatters responded with two runs in the top of the second as Kami Eppley drove an RBI-single up the middle to plate Jordyn Stanfill. Eppley later scored after a single and a wild pitch to extend the Hatters lead to 4-1.

Stetson starter Jaime Tino cruised through the next two innings as the senior went four, allowing one unearned run on just two hits. After Canaan Burnett worked a scoreless fifth inning, Marissa Baxter came on in the sixth and earned a six-out save to seal Stetson's seventh win of the year.

The Hatters turned double plays in the first, third, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings to tie the NCAA record for most double plays turned in a single game.

The Hatters will be back in action on Feb. 25-27 as the Hatters welcome Harvard, Marist, and Rhode Island for the Hatters Classic. Stetson leads off its five-game weekend against Harvard on Friday, Feb. 25. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed on HatterVision on YouTube.
