Hatters drop two on first day of Hatter Classic

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University softball team dropped its first two contests of the Hatter Classic on Friday afternoon as the Hatters fell 9-1 in five innings in game one to Harvard University and then 3-2 in a pitcher's duel in game two against Marist College.

In Stetson's first game of the day, the Hatters (7-6) fell behind 1-0 in the second inning after an RBI-single off the bat of Lauren Bobowski. Then in the second a two-run homer and a third unearned run made it a four-run disadvantage for the Hatters. In the fourth, the Crimson (2-0) tacked on five more runs and took a 9-0 edge into the Stetson half of the fifth.

In the home half of the fifth, the Hatters managed to spoil the shutout as Hailey Donovan homered to right, but that was all for the Stetson bats as Harvard pitching stymied the offense as the game ended in five innings.

Harvard's Katie Arrambide went five innings and allowed one run on one hit to earn the win. Jaime Tino went 3.1 innings as she allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits and struck out one but was tagged for the loss.

In Stetson's second game of the Hatter Classic, the Hatters and Red Foxes (3-4) played three scoreless frames until the top of the fourth when Marist struck first on an RBI-single from Maddie Gore.

In the sixth, the Hatters knotted the game at 1 apiece off a well-placed squeeze bunt from Danielle Diaz. The Red Foxes immediately responded in the top of the seventh with the eventual game-winning two-run homer from Miah McDonald. The Hatters scored a lone run in the bottom half and had the tying and winning runs on base but were unable to push across anymore runs, falling 3-2.

It was a pitcher's duel between Lauren Klein and Meghan Haff as the two battled it out in the circle with both going the distance. Haff earned the win as she allowed two runs, one earned on six hits and struck out eight. Klein was tagged for the loss as she allowed three runs on just five hits and punched out three.

The Hatters are right back at it on Saturday, Feb. 26 for day two of the Hatter Classic as Stetson takes on Rhode Island and Harvard at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. All the action will be streamed on the HatterVision Youtube channel.
