Morgan's heroics lead to a Saturday sweep for the Hatters

DeLand, Fla. -- With two on, one out and down 5-3 to Harvard in the bottom of the seventh inning of Stetson's second game of the day, head coach Shellie Robinson opted to send Evette Morgan to the plate to hit for Haley Fox. It paid off. Morgan stroked a fastball over the center field wall for a walk-off three run homer, sending the Stetson bench into a frenzy and the Hatters home with their second win on the day.

It was all Hatters (9-4) in their first game of the day as Stetson shutout URI 7-0. The Hatters and Rams (2-7) played two and a half scoreless frames until the Stetson bats came alive in the home half of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Danielle Diaz sent a two-run single up the middle to plate Brianna Clary and Kami Eppley. Two batters later, Juls Schumacher singled through the right side to plate Diaz and the Hatters had a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Diaz scored her second run of the contest on a Marissa Baxter sacrifice fly and then Dylan Anthony doubled home Lizzie Shubert to make it a 5-0 Stetson advantage. The next inning, Diaz drove in two more runs with another single up the middle as the senior gave starter Baxter all the run support she needed.

Baxter went the distance in the circle as she only allowed six baserunners on five hits and one walk and punched out one for her first win of the year.

In game two against Harvard, the Hatters struck first in the home half of inning number one on an RBI-single from Lizzie Shubert. The Crimson (2-2) responded in the top of the of second with a solo homer and after that, the Hatters and Crimson went back and forth for the next two innings as the Hatters scored a lone run in the third and the Crimson scored a lone run in the fourth.

Then in the top of the fifth, back-to-back RBI-base hits and a steal of home plated three runs for the Crimson as Harvard took a 5-2 lead. In the bottom half, Diaz drove in Eppley as Stetson managed to get one run back and help set up Morgan's heroics an inning later.

Lauren Klein had a gutsy performance in the circle as the junior went the distance allowing all five runs on eight hits as she punched out six along the way to the win.

Diaz finished the day with four hits and five RBIs total to lead the way for Stetson offensively.

Morgan's walk-off homer was the first Stetson walk-off home run since Lizzie Shubert against Valparaiso back on March, 4 of 2020. It's the first walk-off homer at Patricia Wilson Field in which Stetson was trailing prior to the home run.

The Hatters are right back at it on Sunday, Feb. 27 with the third and final day of the Hatter classic. First pitch against Rhode Island is set for noon and will be streamed on the HatterVision YouTube channel.
