Hatters stymied by Rams pitching

DeLand, Fla. -- In the final game of the Hatter Classic, the Stetson University softball team fell 4-0 to University of Rhode Island Sunday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

It was all Rams Sunday afternoon as the Hatters (9-7) were held to just one hit.

The Rams (3-7) used an RBI-single and a bases loaded walk in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead before the Hatters stepped to the plate. Then in the home half of the first, Danielle Diaz smacked a double down the left field line but was left stranded at second as she was the only Hatter to reach base via a hit.

In both the third and sixth innings, the Hatters had runners at third base with two outs but were unable to produce the two-out hit to drive them home.

Jaime Tino was tagged for the loss as the senior went all seven innings and allowed four runs, only two of them earned, on seven hits and struck out four. The Rams' Liz Lynchard picked up her third win of the year as she also went the distance and allowed one hit and struck out eight Hatters on the day.

Overall, the Hatters went 2-3 on the weekend and were led by Diaz's six hits and six RBIs as well as a home runs from Hailey Donovan and Evette Morgan, with Morgan's being of walk-off fashion.

The Stetson softball team will be back in action on Friday, March 4 as the Hatters host the Stetson Invitational and welcome USC Upstate, FIU, and Bethune-Cookman to DeLand. Stetson will open the tournament against USC Upstate. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
