DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson University softball team struggled on Friday afternoon in their first game of the Stetson Invitational falling to the USC Upstate Spartans (15-1) by final score of 7-2.
Sophomore Lauren Hobbs (1-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Stetson (9-8), while senior Canaan Burnett was a bright spot out of the bullpen, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings while allowing one hit.
Senior Lizzie Shubert led the way offensively for the Hatters, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a solo home run, her first of the year and 23rd of her Stetson career. Freshman Haley Fox put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3.
The game marked the first for head coach Shellie Robinson against her alma mater. The 2014 NCAA All-American was a two-time ASUN Player of the Year for the Spartans and a four-time all-conference selection.
