Second Half Surge Lifts Hatters Past Bellarmine 81-53

Stetson Visits North Alabama at 4:30 p.m. Sunday

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson opened the 2022 ASUN Championship with a resounding 81-53 first round victory over Bellarmine Wednesday night at the Edmunds Center.

Five Hatters scored in double figures as Stetson (19-11) won for the 11th time in the last 12 games.  The Hatters advance to face North Alabama in quarterfinals on Sunday.

Yazz Wazeerud scored a game-high 16 points, while ASUN Newcomer of the Year Tatiana Streun registered 15 points, a career-high 14 rebounds, and five steals to record her sixth double-double of the season.

"She's been great," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "She has been a consistent player for us. The thing about Tati is if she is not scoring, she is doing something to help our team.  She'll rebound, she'll get a deflection, she'll get a stop. Her scoring has been good, too.  She is playing her best basketball right now, and we sure need that."

After leading by just five at the break, Stetson outscored Bellarmine 44-21 in the second half to pull away.  The Hatters shot 40 percent from the floor and held a 47-34 rebounding advantage.  Stetson scored 48 points in the paint and converted 14 steals into 22 fastbreak points.

Alyssa Hargrove scored 11 points, while Kiya Turner and Ayanna Dublin chipped in 10 points apiece.

Jaela Johnson led the Knights (4-24) with 13 points.

Tip-off between the Hatters and Lions from Flowers Hall on Sunday is set for 4:30 p.m. Stetson defeated UNA 75-43 earlier this season.
