DELAND, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's tennis team saw its home win streak snapped by the visiting University of North Florida Ospreys in the ASUN conference opener for both squads on Sunday afternoon at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. UNF took the hard-fought battle by a 4-3 count.
The doubles point was won by the Ospreys, but was pressured as
Diogo Marques and
Clement Hamel won their match 6-4 at flight 3, while UNF took flight 2. It came down to the No.1 teams and UNF was able to secure the point with a 6-4 decision.
Tim Gennes quickly dispatched his opponent, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles to even the match at 1-1 and improve his record to 7-3. However the Ospreys took its lead back with a win at No. 4.
It was Marques at No. 1 singles that evened the match once again with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. He is now 6-5 on the season.
UNF (10-5, 1-0 ASUN) closed out the match with wins at flight 2 and 3 to get the win,
With the contest already decided,
Sami Ozzor and his opponent split their first two sets, sending his match into a third-set tiebreak. He would win it 10-8 and stay unbeaten on the year at 5-0.
Stetson (7-6, 0-1 ASUN), who is now 5-1 at home, will welcome both Florida Gulf Coast (Friday) and Kennesaw State (Sunday) for league matches this upcoming weekend. Friday's match begins at 3 pm.
