Another chapter in the storied history of the Stetson – FGCU rivalry will be written Wednesday night when the Hatters and Eagles meet in the ASUN Conference semifinals in Fort Myers.  Tip-off at Alico Arena is set for 7 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.

The Hatters (20-11), the No. 3 seed in the East, have won four straight and 12 out of 13 to reach the ASUN semifinals for the eighth time in 12 years.

The Eagles (27-2) are the top seed in the tournament, the 20th-ranked team in the nation, and just one of five teams in the country with 27 or more wins on the season.

"It's a tough game for us, but we are used to it," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "They are a very, very good team. We have to come out, we have to play hard, we have to match their energy, and we've got to execute. We can't have a ton of turnovers against them.  We've got to get down and guard."

The teams split the regular season series, with each team winning on its opponent's home court.  FGCU defeated Stetson 78-41 on Jan. 19 in DeLand, and the Hatters defeated the Eagles 58-55 on Feb. 12 in Fort Myers.

FGCU was without their leading scorer Kierstan Bell (23.3 ppg) for that second meeting.  Bell returned on Feb. 24 and has played in the three games since.

"Obviously, having Kierstan back is very significant for them," Bria said. "She does great things for their team, but they're still a well-rounded team. You can't just lock in on her.  You have to look at them as a whole, which we do.

"This time of year, you just have to be able to play a complete game," Bria added.  "I don't think it's any one thing. You have to play a complete game. For us, I think we've gotten better, even since we've played here last time, so hopefully we continue to do that."

Over the past 14 years, Stetson and FGCU have locked horns 35 times, more than any other two teams in the ASUN Conference.

Several of those matchups came in big games. The teams have met four times for the ASUN Championship (2012, 2013, 2014, 2017) and once previously in the ASUN semifinals (2016).  The teams have also played two winner take-all games for the ASUN regular season championship, back in 2014 (FGCU won) and 2017 (Stetson won), both of which were decided in overtime.

While the Eagles hold a 30-5 lead in the all-time series, no other team has as many wins over FGCU as Stetson does. The Hatters are also the only Division I team to have defeated the Eagles twice at Alico Arena. DII Puerto Rico-Bayamon is the only other team to have done so, back in 2003 and 2004.

Wednesday's winner will advance to Saturday's ASUN Championship game to face the winner of the Jacksonville State-Liberty semifinal. If the Eagles win, FGCU would be the host. If the Hatters win, Stetson would travel to either Jacksonville State or Liberty.

Fan Bus
Stetson Athletics will provide a fan bus that will depart the Edmunds Center at 1 p.m. on Wednesday and will return Wednesday night after the game. Stetson will provide the transportation, tickets, water and snacks for those riding the bus. Those interested in attending should email zhurst@stetson.edu by 10 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8. There is limited availability.
