Hobbs holds No. 22 USF to four hits, one run in loss to Bulls

Stetson drops a pair in to nationally-ranked South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - Facing the 22nd-ranked University of South Florida Bulls at USF Softball Stadium Wednesday night, the Stetson University softball team could not stop the home team's winning ways as the Bulls handed the Hatters a pair of losses, 8-0 and 1-0, and extended their streak to 11 straight victories.

A bright spot on the mound for the Hatters in the second game was Lauren Hobbs, who for the third time this season, tossed a seven-inning complete game and allowed just one earned run. Unfortunately for the sophomore, she has lost the last two, including the four-hit, six-strikeout performance against USF in the nightcap.

Stetson (9-14) had a couple of opportunities to score in the second game to take its first lead of the night as, twice, the Hatters got a runner on second with just one out. In the third, it was back-to-back one-out singles by Alyssa Gilman and Brianna Clary, but that was snuffed out by a grounder and a pop up. In the fourth, Evette Morgan doubled with one out, forcing a USF pitching change, and back-to-back strikeouts ended that threat.

USF (19-3) used a two-out, bottom of the fourth rally to score its lone run of game two - an RBI single by Emma Humplik - and, out of the pen, Georgina Corrick closed out the game to improve to 14-0 on the season.

In the first game, Clary reached base twice, with a single and an error, while Morgan was the only other Hatter to reach base when she was hit by a pitch in the fifth.

Stetson returns to the field this weekend, heading to Macon, Georgia to take part in the Mercer Bear Classic taking place on Saturday and Sunday. The Hatters will play four games, two against Iona (Sat., 3 p.m.; Sun., 11 a.m.) and two against the hosts (Sat., 5 p.m.; Sun., 1 p.m.).
