Hatters Fall to 20th-Ranked FGCU in ASUN Semifinals

Stetson led by as many as 13 in the second quarter

Fort Myers, Fla. -- Stetson battled toe-to-toe with top seed and 20th-ranked Florida Gulf Coast for the better part of three quarters in Wednesday's ASUN semifinal, but 11 second half 3-pointers helped carry the Eagles to a 82-67 victory over the Hatters and a spot in the ASUN Championship game.

"First, I want to congratulate Florida Gulf Coast on advancing. It was a good game, and they're a very good team," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.

"I thought for about 30 minutes we executed a game plan. We kind of got undisciplined, and they got some easy 3s in transition, You can't give them easy 3s, because then they start hitting those, and then you have a barrage of 3s."

Stetson jumped out to quick start and led FGCU 21-13 after 1 and 34-28 at the break. Alyssa Hargrove had 13 of her team-high 18 points in the first half to help spark Stetson to a 28-15 lead midway through the second quarter.

After shooting just 4-of-22 from the arc in the opening 20 minutes, the Eagles went on a tear after the break, hitting 11-of-17 triples en route to a 54-point second half.  Kierstan Bell had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles (28-2).

In addition to the 18 points from Hargrove, Stetson got 17 from Jamiya Turner, 12 from Tatiana Streun and 10 from Ayanna Dublin.  The Hatters shot 49 percent from the floor and held a 44-28 edge in points in the paint.

After starting the year 1-4 in conference play, the Hatters (20-12) went on a run to battle their way into third place in the ASUN East Division.  A pair of tournament victories and a brilliantly played first half in the semifinal put Stetson on the cusp of its first ASUN final in five years.  Overall, Stetson went 12-2 from Jan. 22 on.

"It's a credit to our players," Bria said.  "We have a group that plays hard. They're a close team. I feel like we've gotten better every game.  We had to move people around, and people have been accepting of those roles.  I can't get over the progress we made.  We've become a pretty good team."

The Hatters will now wait and see if they are selected for one of the women's basketball postseason tournaments.
