Stetson finishes off sweep of Florida Gulf Coast

It's the Hatters first three-game sweep in ASUN action since 2015

DELAND, Fla. - The power of Stetson University's softball team was on full display on Sunday afternoon as the team went for the ASUN series sweep over Florida Gulf Coast. The Hatters hit three home runs and Lauren Hobbs tossed another complete game to finish the three-game sweep of the Eagles with a 6-1 comeback win at Patricia Wilson Field.

The sweep is the Hatters first in a three-game ASUN series since April 18-19, 2015 when they took three from Northern Kentucky. Ironically, the last time Stetson swept the Eagles was three weeks prior in that 2015 season - March 28-29.

Sunday's win also extended Stetson's winning streak to five games, the longest for the team since March 10-15, 2018, when the team also won five. Four of those wins have come in ASUN play, and 2015 is also the last time Stetson won four straight league games (the NKU sweep followed by a win over North Florida the following week).

However, FGCU (13-25, 6-9) did score the game's first run in the second inning when Tayli Filla drove in Neely Peterson with an RBI triple, the last time an Eagle would touch third base.

It was a different story for the Stetson offense as they showed off its power at the plate. Jordyn Stanfill tied the game in the third with a solo home run that cleared the scoreboard. Marissa Baxter gave the Hatters a 4-1 lead with a three-run home run in the fifth and Evette Morgan added a two-run shot to cap a five-run frame that padded the Stetson lead to 6-1. Stanfill almost walked the game off in the frame with her second of the game (it would have been a three-run home run), but the ball drifted just foul.

That was plenty of run support, though, for Hobbs as she scattered two hits, two hit-by-pitches and a walk after the second to record her second complete game of the weekend.

Additional Notes
- Baxter registered her seventh multi-hit game of the season, and her team-leading sixth multi-RBI game. It was her fourth home run of the year and leads the team with 25 RBI.
- Morgan notched her fourth multi-hit game of the year, and her fifth multi-RBI game. It was also her fourth home run of the season.
- Stanfill hit her team-high tying fifth home run of the season.
- This is the second time this season Stetson has hit three home runs in a game, the other was at North Alabama (March 19). The last time the Hatters hit three home runs at home was March 31, 2018 versus Lipscomb.
- Haley Fox recorded her seventh multi-hit game of the year, and her third double.
- Lizze Shubert (6) and Danielle Diaz (5) also had doubles in the contest.
- Hobbs now leads the team in wins (8), innings pitched (106.2), strikeouts (73) and complete games (11). With her third strikeout of the game, she notched the 100th of her Hatter career. Her numbers in ASUN-only games now includes a 7-0 record, a 1.04 ERA, seven complete games, two shutouts, 54 innings and 35 strikeouts.
- Hobbs and Lauren Klein limited the FGCU offense to just two runs over 21 innings, the fewest by a Hatter pitching staff in a three-game ASUN series since April 5-6, 2014 at Northern Kentucky, when Stetson allowed just one run in a three-game sweep, but that was only over 15 innings. The fewest runs allowed in a three-game ASUN series (21 innings pitched) prior to this weekend was three, versus ETSU on April 20-21, 2013 - the first year the league changed its weekend formats

Stetson (19-22, 8-4 ASUN) is off to its second-best start since 2013, when the ASUN went to three-game weekends instead of back-to-back doubleheaders versus two different opponents. In 2014, Stetson was 9-2 after weekend number four with a school-best, three series wins, now matched by the 2022 squad. The Hatters have the midweek off, but return to conference play on Friday with a single game at Jacksonville, first pitch set for 5 pm. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 pm.
