Hatters win school record 19th match of the season

Stetson notches record breaker in 7-0 victory at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With its 7-0 victory over Bellarmine on Thursday morning, the Stetson University women's tennis team set the school record for most wins in a single season, as the Hatters won their 19th of the year. The previous mark of 18 wins in a season was first set over 35 years ago by the 1986 squad and had been tied twice in the last decade by both the 2010 and 2014 teams, however the 2022 Hatters now own the best mark all by themselves.

The victory also helped Stetson (19-2, 7-1 ASUN) keep pace for the top spot in the upcoming ASUN Championship with both #68 Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida. On Thursday, the Eagles outlasted Central Arkansas, 4-3, while the Osprey defeated Liberty, 6-1. All three programs will enter Saturday's final day of competition tied for first in the league with identical 7-1 league records.

"It was great to make a little history today, but we are really after just keeping that level of competitiveness up and trying to bring home a championship trophy," Stetson head women's tennis coach Travis Sandlant said. "It was good that Anna (Dovgopolyi) stepped up again today to fill the spot we needed her to today."

Starting the day, Alanna DiFrancesco and Anna Dovgopolyi teamed for the first time this year to win on Court 3, 6-1, before doubles pair Nadejda Maslova and Cheri Darley won their fourth straight match, their team-leading 13th overall and their first of the year on Court 1, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point.

In singles, all six Hatters won in straight sets while not allowing a single opponent to win more than two games in a set. Noa Cohen (flight 5) and DiFrancesco (flight 4) each won their 19th match of the year, as Cohen stayed unbeaten this season at 19-0. DiFrancesco, 19-1, and Darley (flight 3), who now has 18 wins, each have lost just once this year. Anais Gabriel improved to 13-4 and Maslova to 12-6, while Dovgopolyi is 4-0 including singles wins in Stetson's last two matches.

The Hatters head to Liberty to face the Flames on Saturday at 11 am to finish off the regular season before heading to Fort Myers, Florida for the ASUN Women's Tennis Championships that start on Friday, April 22.
