JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Stetson University softball team found itself on the wrong side of a pair of one-run decisions against Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon in ASUN action at Pruitt Softball Complex. The Hatters lost the first of the day, 4-3, then went a season-long nine innings with the Dolphins in the second, before dropping it, 3-2.
In the first game, Stetson trailed 3-0 after the fourth inning, but
Marissa Baxter quickly changed that in the fifth with a three-run home run that scored
Alyssa Gilman and
Brianna Clary. For Baxter, it was her fifth long ball of the season, one shy of the team lead, and pushed her RBI total to 28, which is a team-best.
However, the Dolphins were able to get a two-out, RBI single in the home half of the sixth and Skylar Whittey tossed a perfect seventh to get the win out of the pen.
In the nightcap, it was the Hatters who jumped out to the early lead, with
Jordyn Stanfill plating Clary with an RBI double in the first. It was
Lizzie Shubert's turn in the third, registering a two-out RBI double that scored Clary again and give the visitors a 2-0 lead in the third. Clary had three total hits in the game, her third game this season with at least three and her team-best 13th multi-hit game of the year.
Jacksonville (14-23, 8-7 ASUN), though, responded with a two-run home run from Joely Leguizamon that tied the game in the home half of the third.
Over the next five frames, Whitty and
Lauren Hobbs battled back and forth in the circle, not allowing a single run as the game moved into extra innings. The Dolphins, however, would get the game-winner again with a two-out single, this time in the ninth, to claim the doubleheader victory.
For Hobbs, her 8.2 innings thrown in the contest was a career-high, surpassing her previous of 7.0 done 10 times prior. Another milestone was reached in the second game as Shubert started and played in her 200th career game for the Hatters.
Stetson (19-25, 8-7 ASUN) returns to action on Tuesday, when the Hatters travel to Tallahassee to take on Top 10-ranked Florida State with first pitch scheduled for 5 pm.
