Shubert homers in 4-1 loss at No. 5 Florida State

It was the senior's 27th of her Hatter career

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - For the first time since 1996, the Stetson University softball team traveled to the state capital to face Florida State, and in the Hatters' first game with the Seminoles since 2000, No. 5 Florida State handed Stetson a 4-1 loss in nonconference action on Tuesday evening at JoAnne Graf Field.

Florida State (40-5) used a pair of singles and an error to put two runs on the board in the first.

However, Stetson pitcher Lauren Hobbs settled in and retired 11 straight Seminoles to allow her team to remain within striking distance.

Senior Lizzie Shubert provided the Hatters with a solo home run to open the fifth frame to make it a one-run contest. It was her fifth home run of the year and the 27th of her career. With her next, she will tie Courtney Brandt (2012-15) for fifth all-time in the school's history books, while her 281 total bases are already fifth and her 108 RBI are 10th.

The Seminoles added a pair of insurance runs to their lead in the home half of the sixth to complete the game's scoring. This was the first game between the two schools since the two played a doubleheader in DeLand on Feb. 20, 2000 and the first in Tallahassee since Feb. 24, 1996.

Stetson (19-26) returns to the field this weekend for a key three-game ASUN set against North Florida. The series with the Ospreys starts with a doubleheader on Saturday at Patricia Wilson Field at 1 pm.
