Stetson seniors honored prior to game with Kennesaw State

Hatters were defeated in their final home game of the season by Owls, 5-3

DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson University softball team was handed a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the visiting Kennesaw State Owls in ASUN action on Sunday afternoon. Prior to first pitch, Stetson honored five members of its program - Canaan Burnett, Danielle Diaz, Kara Saylor, Lizzie Shubert and Jaime Tino - who were all in the home dugout for their final game at Patricia Wilson Field.

Tino got the start in the circle for the Hatters, and despite a first-inning run, kept the Owls' offense in check for most of the game. Stetson tied it in the fourth on a two-out, RBI single from Evette Morgan which scored Brianna Clary, who singled - one of her two hits on the day.

Kennesaw State (18-26, 9-12 ASUN) reclaimed the lead at 2-1 in the sixth, and added three in the seventh, with hits just out of reach of Hatter defenders, to cushion its advantage at four runs.

Memorable at-bats followed for two seniors in their final plate appearances at home. Diaz led off the inning with a bunt single and Shubert slammed her team-leading seventh home run to pull the Hatters to within two, but they would get no closer. It was Shubert's 29th career home run, fifth most at the school, and now has 115 career RBI, good for eighth. She is one home run shy of becoming just the fourth Hatter with at least 30 doubles and 30 home runs in a career, last accomplished by Demi Meza (2012-15).

Stetson (20-32, 9-12 ASUN) will close out the regular season with a three-game series at Liberty starting on Friday with a doubleheader, first pitch set for 2 pm.
