Hatters Come Up Short in 5-2 Loss to JU

DELAND, Fla. -- The Stetson Hatters put together a valiant performance on Friday morning, but ultimately came up short, losing to Jacksonville 5-2.

The loss to the Dolphins eliminated Stetson (25-29, 9-20) from ASUN Tournament contention while virtually guaranteeing Jacksonville (27-24, 13-15) a spot in the event next week in Ft. Myers.

Senior Chris Gonzalez (1-5) started for Stetson and gave everything he had to give the Hatters a chance in the game. He worked six innings in the final start of his tremendous collegiate career, scattering 11 hits. The Dolphins were finally able to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning, getting a two-run single from Jesus Pacheco to put JU in front for good.

Dolphins starter Michael Darrel-Hicks (5-4) worked into the sixth inning, surrendering a solo home run to Cameron Hill in the first. He left with a runner on base after a walk, and that turned into the second Stetson run on a two-out single by Yohann Dessureault, cutting the JU lead to 3-2.

The first two Dolphins reached base against Gonzalez in the seventh before junior Danny Garcia came on in relief. Elias Flowers welcomed Garcia with a two-run single just past the glove of Hatters' second baseman Banks Griffith. Garcia responded by getting a fly ball and a pair of strikeouts to end the inning. He allowed just one base runner over the final two frames.

Bryce Fisher relieved the JU starter in the sixth and allowed just two hits over 2.1 innings before Tyler Vogel came on in the ninth to record his 11th save of the year.

Dessureault led Stetson with two hits in the game while Blake DeLamielluere led JU with three hits.

The teams are scheduled to close out the regular season on Saturday morning, weather permitting. The first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. Check GoHatters.com and the @StetsonBaseball account on Twitter for any updates on the status of the game.
