Hatters' season comes to an end with loss at No. 9 Miami

Stetson knocked out of NCAA Championship by Hurricanes, 4-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Stetson University women's tennis team's 2022 season came to an end on Friday afternoon as the ninth-seeded Miami Hurricanes defeated the 61st-ranked Hatters 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Team Championship held at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Miami.

"Miami was very good today. We gave it all we could and took it to them at a high level," Stetson head women's tennis coach Travis Sandlant said. "The team knows this is just the beginning for us. We are ready to take the next step and compete and beat teams on the national stage. This is a season we won't forget. Thanks to everyone that made it possible." Miami (18-5), ranked ninth in the country, took the doubles point with 6-1 wins on Courts 1 and 3. On Court 2, Cheri Darley and Nadejda Maslova were leading their opponents, Tatyana Nikolenko and Maya Tahan, ranked 76th nationally, 4-3, before the match went unfinished.

The Hurricanes then registered straight set wins in singles at flights 2, 6 and 5 that sealed their victory.

Stetson (22-3) saw two Hatters win first sets against their opponents, while a third lost it in a tiebreaker and all three went unfinished. On Court 1, Maslova took the first set 7-6 (8-6) against Eden Richardson, ranked 37th nationally, but was trailing 3-0 at match end.

On Court 3, Darley took set one, 6-1, her opponent, 92nd-ranked Isabella Pfennig, won set two and it was tied 2-2 at the end.

Looking toward the future, of those who competed for the Hatters today, only Anais Gabriel departs, while Noa Cohen was the lone junior.
