Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SU women's soccer falls short against Coastal Carolina

DELAND, Fla. – Hatters women's soccer dropped a one-goal match to visiting Coastal Carolina, 1-0, Sunday evening at the Athletic Training Center.

Stetson falls to 3-5 and snaps a two-game win streak, while CCU improves to 1-4-2 with neither side playing in conference yet.

"It's a game of finishing your chances," head coach Chris Bergmann said. "I thought we created a lot of offense and great opportunities on net. We need to put those away, I thought it was the difference in the game. We felt really good overall with the team, the energy and fight. Coastal Carolina is a tough, strong and physical team that I thought we combated well. What we'll take into conference is that we are creating offense, now it's about finishing it."

After a chance in the first minute of play, an off-target shot by the Chanticleer forward Megan Brouse, the Hatter offense snapped into gear, generating four shots, three on goal, over the next eight
minutes.

The game settled into a stalemate with the teams trying to build, with the ball being contested in the middle third of the pitch for over 10 minutes. The stalemate was broke when the Chants had a pair of corner kicks in the 26th minute the second of which the Chants put over the bar for a goal kick.

The ensuing build-up play resulted in freshman Zoie Weinberger answering with a shot at the CCU goal but missing to the right.

The game turned in favor of the visitors after Brouse received a throw in while covered in the goal box. The forward turned to her right and tried to knock in a cross that bounced off the defender for a corner kick. The low cross outswinging corner kick was misplayed by the defender in the box, a left footed clearance that skipped off the side of her foot, and spiraled into the Hatter net, 1-0 in favor of the visitors.

Stetson had opportunities to answer, but could not solve the Chanticleer defense with visiting goalkeeper Hope Morrow making a few crucial saves of the Hatters six shots on goal, as the visitors held
on to win by the single goal.

Following the game, seven members of the Stetson soccer team were honored for senior day. Annie Wysong, Alex Milano, Abigail Batchelor, Maggie Struble, Sydney McKee, Telma Sif Buadottir and Camila Capmany were among the honorees. The recognition goes along with academic achievement as Wysong is a graduate transfer and there are juniors graduating early.

"The seniors are always something special because when you get through a program you want to leave a legacy," head coach Chris Bergmann said. "And with these ladies with what you saw with their battling and their heart have left a great legacy. You want to leave a place better than when you found it and these ladies did that, like the seniors before them. They're creating a great environment, a fighting spirit and helping to set us up for championships in the future."

Stetson women's soccer will go on the road to open conference play, traveling to Lynchburg, Virginia to face the Liberty Flames to open ASUN play Thursday with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. Following that, it will be South to Charlotte to face Queens University Sunday with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. Information for those matches, such as live stats and video streaming, will be provided in the upcoming preview.
