DELAND, FL -- A pair of late goals by Central Arkansas handed Stetson men's soccer its first ASUN lost of the season, 3-1, Saturday night at the Athletic Training Center.
"UCA has played against some really strong teams," head coach Emmett Rutkowski said "They've played against Washington, Portland and Memphis, some top RPI teams. We haven't played a team of that caliber yet and those small details of playing against those caliber teams is what you need to do well. Our response after the first goal was much needed. When we scored it was some of the best play we had all season. We made a mistake in transition and they score a second. We were thinking how are we winning this game when it's 1-1, instead we go down 2-1. At the end of the day, we had to be better in their attacking third. Set pieces we need to be more dangerous on. We just need to execute better and give ourselves a shot. At times, UCA was sending a few different tactics defensively but we did not handle it that well, and they did a good job executing it."
The loss dropped Stetson's record to 3-2-3 overall and 2-1-0 in ASUN play. UCA remains undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 record, paired with 4-3-1 overall.
Despite early chances for both sides, the match went to the half even at nil-nil. Hatter goalkeeper Owen Jack compiled nine saves, seven of which occurred in the opening frame.
The fireworks started in the 54th minute with UCA cracking the scoreboard first when Richy Lapointe-Guevara found the back of the net after redirecting a free kick in from Daniel Shabani, 1-nothing in favor of the visitors.
The home side struck back two minutes 36 seconds later when Charles Ahl notched his first career goal. The sophomore midfielder notched the scoresheet completing an offensive set that saw Colton Myers play it deep to Gio Rodriguez who sent a cross across the face of the goal to an unmarked Ahl, who settled the ball before sending it into the mesh, one a piece.
In the 79th minute, after a number of tacticle changes in both teams lineups, the Bears got their second break through when Jerry Gutierrez put the visitors back ahead, 2-1. Sebastian Andreassen sealed the game in the the 88th minute with finishing a counterattack [3-1].
Stetson continues ASUN Conference play with a trip to Lynchburg, Virginia next Saturday when the Hatters face the Liberty Flames. Kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
