LYNCHBURG, Va. – Despite having the game's two leading scorers,
Jamiya Turner and
Khamya McNeal, both with 15, Hatter women's basketball dropped a game to Liberty, 77-50, Thursday night in Liberty Arena.
The Hatters kept pace early as the home side got on the board seven seconds into the contest, then added a free throw before
Jamiya Turner tied the game at three on the next possession with a shot from behind the arc. Slowly the advantage started building for the home side after
Jordan Peete knocked down a three to put the Hats within two, 8-6, but Liberty seized the advantage scoring eight of the next 12 points for a six-point lead, 16-10, going into the second frame.
Stetson responded in at the start of the second quarter with Turner, McNeal and
Mali Morgan-Elliott combining on offense to cut the deficit to three, 19-16. Liberty held the Hatters at bay as the lead bounced between three and seven points until Dee Brown hit a three for the home team, followed by another three and layup pushing the advantage to 15, 33-18. The Hats scored four unanswered to close the half [33-22].
The home side built up the second half similar to the first with Stetson cutting into the lead with Liberty reestablishing the margin then building a little more to it with the game culminating in a 77-50 defeat.
Turner scored in double figures for the fifth game in a row, every game Turner has been in since returning. Three of those five, Turner has paced or shared the top scoring spot for Stetson. In addition, Turner collected the most rebounds [5] for the Hats and dished the most assists [2].
SU remains on the road but travels South with a stop in Charlotte to face Queens for the first time in program history. That game will be live streamed on ESPN+ and tips off Saturday at 2 p.m.
